Etching techniques and effects

Etching is a simple process of removing metal from a surface using acids (etchants), in a controlled manner. The choice of etchant allows changes to the way different metal will etch, so that different depths and surface finishes can be achieved. The areas of metal etched away can be filled with coloured enamel allowing creative effects to be achieved in two major ways, the design to be etched into metal and then how this design is coloured. Further effects can be achieved by using metal finishing techniques on the etched and filled plates, mirror or satin polished, fabrication and electroplating.

The trend towards more elaborate design in the presentation of logos has been powered by new computer technology and digital printing. These designs are being requested on metal signs and the section below should help you to understand how these new designs will translate onto metal. These examples are only the beginning of what may be achieved.

Unlike other etchers who use a screen printed stencil, we produce images directly onto the metal surface using the same technology as is used to produce silicon chips. We are therefore not limited to the rather crude detail achieved by screen printing a thick resist and we can translate the finest possible detail onto metal. We also believe in constant research and development to offer more creative techniques, the aim being to meet all the demands of our customers, as designers give them fresh challenges.

As a signmaker, engraver or designer you will encounter requests for signs even more exotic than any shown below. If you are in any doubt as to the viability of such a job, please send us details to be able to quote. Quite often we develop new techniques specifically to produce a particular sign. This may seem expensive but it is the best possible way of adding to our skills.

We do of course have very good design skills of our own, so if your customer cannot provide an exact specification, we can suggest and produce a design for you to present.

The sections listed above will give you a taste of how some techniques can be used to reproduce designs both modern and traditional.
